Compact, durable, and capable of capturing stunning footage in the most extreme conditions, action camera has revolutionized the way we document our travels.
The Rise of Action Camera
Gone are the days of bulky camcorders and fragile DSLRs. Action cameras have emerged as the go-to choice for travelers seeking to document their trips. With their compact size and robust build, these cameras are designed to withstand the rigors of travel, whether you’re hiking, biking, or zip-lining through the jungle. The rise of action cameras can be attributed to their convenience and the advancements in technology that have made high-quality video recording accessible to everyone.
A Brief History
I promise, just a few facts! The first action cameras were introduced in the early 2000s, with GoPro leading the charge. These early models were relatively simple, offering basic video recording capabilities. However, they quickly gained popularity among extreme sports enthusiasts who needed a durable and portable way to capture their stunts. Over the years, technology has advanced, bringing a variety of features for travelers and adventurers.
Impact on Travel Documentation
Action cameras have significantly changed the way we document our travels. Traditional cameras often require careful handling and setup, making them less suitable for spontaneous moments. And I am the perfect example of a person that really tried but eventually decided to sell my “regular” one! In contrast, action cameras can be quickly mounted and activated. This, in turn, allows for the capture of dynamic and unpredictable events. This ease of use has enabled travelers to create more engaging content, whether for personal memories or social media sharing.
Your new action camera: Features to look for
All in all, here are several key features to consider:
- Durability:
- Look for cameras that are waterproof, shockproof, and dustproof to ensure they can withstand the elements. Not only is this is crucial for travelers who might be exposed to harsh conditions, from tropical rainstorms to dusty deserts, but also to those who hike or get near waterfalls.
- Image Quality:
- Opt for cameras that offer high-resolution video capabilities, such as 4K or even 8K, for crisp, detailed footage. Moreover, high frame rates are also important for capturing smooth slow-motion videos, which can add a dramatic effect to your recordings.
- Stabilization:
- Built-in image stabilization is crucial for capturing smooth, shake-free footage, especially during fast-paced activities. Look for “Electronic Image Stabilization” (EIS) and “Optical Image Stabilization” (OIS) which are two common technologies used to achieve this.
- Mounting Options:
- This is important if you love being active. Versatile mounting options allow you to attach the camera to helmets, bikes, or even drones, providing unique perspectives of your adventures. Look for a wide range of mounts and accessories to ensure you can capture footage from any angle.
- Battery Life:
- Long battery life ensures you won’t miss any crucial moments, so look for cameras with extended battery capabilities or the option to swap out batteries on the go. Consider carrying extra batteries or a portable charger for longer trips.
- Connectivity:
- Built-in Wi-Fi or Bluetooth can be beneficial for quickly transferring files to your smartphone or other devices. Some cameras also offer live streaming capabilities, allowing you to share your adventures in real-time.
- User Interface:
- A user-friendly interface is important for quickly changing settings and reviewing footage. Touchscreens and voice control features can enhance the ease of use, especially in situations where you need to operate the camera hands-free.

2. DJI Osmo Action
DJI, renowned for its drones, has entered the action camera market with the Osmo Action. With impressive image stabilization, 4K video recording, and a front-facing screen for easy selfie shots, the Osmo Action is a solid choice for adventurers.
Personal Experience:
We bought it only recently, as the underwater camera we had before was too terrible to use! The quality sometimes made the clips impossible to be watched, especially because of literally zero stabilization.
This one was tested in extreme conditions and the image is always amazing. It’s small, lightweight, cheaper than its GoPro competitor (and many claim its quality is superior). You can buy it with insurance that even covers being sloppy (something I really value).
DJI improved the issue that earlier version had, so quick overheating. However, this one let us down too when I wanted to shoot a video of me on a Wadi Rum desert – the camera turned off after ~3 minutes because of the heat. But to be fair, it was a desert and it was bloody hot! 🥵
Tested Conditions:
- E-scooter rides on bumpy roads
- Horse riding in snow, capturing a horse-fall in Tenerife
- Snorkeling in the Red Sea
- Hiking through Wadi Mujib – a canyon with river currents and waterfalls
- Sandboarding in Wadi Rum desert
3. Insta360 ONE R
The Insta360 ONE R takes it to the next level with its modular design, allowing users to swap out lenses for different shooting scenarios. Whether you’re capturing wide-angle landscapes or 360-degree footage, the ONE R delivers stunning results.
Key Features:
- Modular Design: Interchangeable lenses for different shooting needs
- 5.7K 360 Video: High-resolution 360-degree video
- FlowState Stabilization: Advanced stabilization technology
- Waterproof: Up to 16 feet without any additional covers
Additional Considerations when picking your new action camera
Editing Software
Having an action camera is just the first step. Some might tell you that, to make the most of your footage, you should also consider investing in good editing software (so applications like Adobe Premiere Pro). I don’t agree: I believe you can also create incredible videos just using your phone: the app that I absolutely recommend is CapCut – expect a post about it soon! Editing software can help you correct color, add music, and even incorporate slow-motion effects to highlight the most exciting moments.
Storage Solutions
High-resolution videos can quickly consume storage space. Ensure you have good quality memory cards with high read and write speeds to handle 4K or 8K video recording. External hard drives or cloud storage solutions can also be beneficial for backing up your footage and freeing up space on your action camera.
Community and Resources
Joining online communities and forums dedicated to action cameras can provide valuable insights and tips. In summary, websites like Reddit, photography forums, and even YouTube channels offer reviews, tutorials, and advice from experienced users. Engaging with these communities can help you learn new techniques and make informed decisions about your gear.
Summary
In conclusion, action cameras have become helpful tools for travellers looking to capture their adventures with stunning clarity and detail. With their compact size, durable construction, and advanced features, these cameras enable us to relive our best memories. If you’re an active person, an action camera is the perfect companion for you. So, pack your bags, grab your camera, and embark on your next great adventure – the world is waiting to be captured.
